Test shoot with with Amy Lewis and Desiree Lacole! These two women are incredibly talented and fun to work with. We did several looks for this shoot varying from light and natural to dramatic with a dark red lipstick.
And the addition of... dry ice! This was so much fun to do. I've worked with dry ice several times outdoors, but never for anything quite like this. (Inspo- the magical Sue Bryce, photographers you can check her out on creativeLive.com! She's a portrait master). This last look, expertly blended with gold and bronze shadows, was my favorite.
A few tips..
*dry ice will burn your skin, so use oven mitts or some very thick gloves to avoid touching it. You may need a hammer or mallet to break it.
*we used rubbermaid tupperware to put the water/dry ice in, which is both low to the ground, and somewhat sturdy. Glass would probably break from the rapid and dramatic temperature changes. I've also used empty ice cream buckets.
*hot water produces more fog than cold
*plan your poses and shoot fast! Fog only lasts a few minutes so knowing what you're doing ahead of time can make a huge difference. For bigger stuff or outdoors shoots, I always end up compositing layers of the fog from different photos into the image.

It's been a great year at Alyssia Booth's Candid & Studio! All of our Holiday shoots are done, mischief is managed, and the studio is a sparkly decoration filled mess!
Prints, disks, keychains and other gift items ordered at our Pet-X Holiday Photo Day have been dropped off with the lovely ladies at the main register in Pet-X. If you were at our events on the 12th or 13th of December and haven't picked up your order yet, it's there waiting for you.
The raffle winner for a Location Photo Shoot has been chosen and will be contacted in January after the holidays.

And for a peek at last year's photos...
The studio is now closed for the holidays until January 12th of 2016. I will be out of the country on a photo safari (yay!), and will respond to any emails or messages when we get back.
This summer I found a beautiful field of purple wild flowers. It was a perfect location for a dreamy romantic proposal. I sent out a few messages and found a couple of willing models!
JJ and Julianna had perfect chemistry right from the start, and amazing acting skills. It was like they'd known each other forever, they were THAT convincing.
While I was doing photograhy, my sister, Kristina, was shooting a Love Story and Announcement Video.
When we shared the photographs and videos, JJ and Julianna's friends and family were very surprised! They had missed that little faux engagement note! Both models got an insane amount of congratulations and comments, a few OMG notes, and some panicked emails from family. It was hilarious and a lot of fun!

What a year it’s been! I started out 2014 on an AMAZING trip to Africa. When I got back it was straight into shooting, and I barely had time to look through my safari photos! Now in the winter months again I finally have time to reflect on everything. It’s been a wonderful year of growth for my business, and I couldn’t be happier. The goals I set for my studio have far exceeded my expectations in 2014. For starters, we did a ton more ad design than in the past, and my creative photography was featured in several print publications. A number of my canine portraits will also be used in the AKC’s newest volume of the official breed book. Digger’s photo is going to be in a new American Water Spaniel breed book as well.
Secondly, I finally started blogging! There is a lot that goes into the crazily artistic work I do, and I like to share that. This coming year I’ll be adding more detail and behind the scenes, some before and after photos, and maybe even a few behind the scenes videos.
As the new year begins my thoughts are on the future. I’m so excited that 2015 has arrived… I’m already setting new goals and intentions for both my personal and professional life. This coming year will be filled with a lot of travel, beautiful photoshoots, adventure, and wonderful changes.
Happy New Year!!!
In wild lands of golden trees
Friends are found in grasses sweet,
He'll lead the heart astray... a hissssss
A fruit so sweet to tempt the lips
Beguiling love to taste so rich

“A magician makes the visible invisible. A mime makes the invisible visible.” ~Marcel Marceau
When I was a senior in high school and student prank day was approaching I wanted to hire a mime to follow around our vice principle for the day and mock everything he did. Unfortunately at the time I had no luck finding a mime to so... It would have been so much fun!
I’ve always found mimes to be fascinating and highly entertaining. I love discovering street performers in my travels. Some of them have been quite brilliant at telling stories with only the use of their body motions.
This shoot is a part of my 52 Weeks of Photography project. It's a personal weekly challenge for myself to do something crazily creative and outside the box of normality that we are all trapped in. Life is meant to be lived, not spent in an endless tidal wave of monotonous chores, and we silently forget that every day of our lives unless something interesting comes along to spur a spark of insane difference strong enough to stir us from our zombie-like stroll of blah and Netflix.
In their silence, mimes can create that spark. They are creative souls, and very expressive. People always stop to watch them, whether out of delighted entertainment or fearful curiosity.
Last night I watched the movie Brave. Mother’s day just passed, and it’s a great example of the dysfunction and love in mother/daughter relationships. I think it’s a great film, with beautifully done animation and artwork. I’ve always loved crazy hair like Merida has and the fiery personality they wrote her matches that hair perfectly.
Shortly after seeing the movie for the first time not too long ago, I did a Brave inspired photo shoot with a cos-player I know. Ashley had made a perfect replica dress by hand and did a fantastically huge wig up, long wefts and untold amounts of time curling individual strands included!
After getting together, an adventure to Curwood Castle followed! It’s a beautiful little place out in Owasso where I love to shoot. Built in 1922 by a dreamer and author, James Oliver Curwood, it's a museum now. He used the turrets for his writing studio...
This year I have begun a 52 weeks project. Deciding on all the weekly themes was a bit crazy and very fun. I wrote down all the ideas, concepts, and themes that I've wanted to do but not actually gotten around to doing, then cut the list into individual pieces with an idea on each. After that I retrieved a top hat from the top shelf in my studio, dropped what was now essentially a pile of confetti into it, and shook it all up. To pick the final order I just drew out random papers, and turned them into a lovely little final list. Here's the result!
Week one I made a bit more interesting than a normal self portrait. In the middle of the night I did a ton of photos of myself by lamp light with a little fill flash, flipping my hair about to make it look like it was floating. Afterwards came photoshop, some fish, and voila! I'm a mermaid.
Week two was flight. I love flying and levitation images. I have wanted to do one for a while, but other things kept getting in the way. I needed to escape from that constant barrage of things that distract me, which is super hard to do! Anyone else want to visit Neverland with me? I hear it's great this time of year...
One of the fantastic things about social media is the ability to connect with other professionals in your area and across the globe.
This past weekend I attended a photo shoot with the Lansing area's photographers. My good friend and a fellow photographer Karie Boyd found the location, which was More Than Fine Photography's large and spacious studio in Charlotte. It's not far away and has tons of gorgeous natural light. I'll likely rent it for use with some sessions in the future. If you're looking for somewhere to shoot in- you should look into it too! The wood floors, huge windows, warm brick walls... I'm just in love with the place. That and there are obviously a bunch of artists in the building as evidence from the paintings and sculptures on the way up to it. I love seeing art everywhere. It's one of those addicting things to me... the more creative an atmosphere the more I love it!
So! I helped plan for the shoot and find models for it. Finding models is fun and sometimes difficult. For this shoot our theme was Pinup, 20's-50's Era, and Boudoir. I shot out a few messages to people I've met with before for shoots and both Alyssa and Brittany were interested. If I don't have specific people in mind, I usually post casting calls online using my Facebook business page, Modelmayhem, or various Michigan networking groups on Facebook for photographers, models, stylists, designers, etc. (search any of those keywords for your state and at least one group will pop up). Model Mayhem takes some weeding through to find people who are motivate, know what they are doing, and will actually show up. The same goes for facebook groups, although people are easier to actually contact on there.
This shoot was a great opportunity to meet other photographers in the area! We had a lot of fun photographing each other, the models, behind the scenes, and everything going on. It went super smoothly, and everyone involved had a great time. I'm planning fun shoots with a few other photographers as a result. I love doing themed and out of the box photo shoots, and the more people involved, the crazier the idea generally gets. It's great!

I had so much fun photographing Alfie Jean and Jack! This jazz singing couple braved the post blizzard snowfall and drove to our 50's Coca Cola Bar in Williamston for a shoot. Born in the wrong decade, this themed shoot was a perfect fit for Alfie and Jack.
Jack and Alfie Jean met in college five years ago in the college choir. They were both very involved in the music department (now they play a Jazz duet together!). At the time they were both in relationships with other people, so they became very good friends. Jack was always there when Alfie Jean needed someone to talk to and vice versa. He didn't know until recently that Alfie Jean had a secret crush on him the whole time.... And she found out he felt the same!
"Two summers ago we were both single. We started to work together, spent all of our free time with one another and it just worked out naturally. Today, we are a very active Jazz duo and share every part of our lives together. I believe we are a couple of vintage souls captured in love!"
"His smile just makes me melt!"
Alfie Jean and Jack's duet is The Fifth Avenue. Check out their page for information on shows!

Life by a String
It's been a while since I've shot anything quite this creative. The millions of ideas floating around inside my brain want to escape, grab onto the wind and LIVE. I've just been so focused on other things and other priorities that my creative pull died for a while in all the distractions. After a breather it's come back to life! Things are going to get messy, they are going to get creative, and things are going to get done.
Creativity is something I've always flourished in. It makes the air more breathable, the world more beautiful. Without it everything would be dull and drab and gray and meaningless. I have so much planned this fall, and so many interesting new people that I'll be working with. Every new face brings new ideas to the table, new inspiration to life.
Let's let the wind carry us away....
Congratulations to Becca and Craig!
This past fall I did a maternity photo session with them. It was fantastic! Seeing the glow in a beautiful woman when she’s excited and nervous and expecting her first little bundle of love is amazing. Becca was no exception!
With a little boy on the way, we did a beautiful photo shoot on Flashpoint Ranch (A.K.A. my photo park!) and had a great time with different looks in the field, near the woods, and various other places. Becca’s belly was beautifully round, and with only a couple of weeks to go before her due date, it was the perfect time for our shoot.
Since then Becca and Craig have welcomed Connor, their new little bundle of trouble into the world!
Congratulations you two!
On my original blog I did a post about a shoot from this summer of an American Water Spaniel (owned by a lovely woman by the name of Linda Hattrem). She was sending in a photo from our shoot to be used in her breed's section of the new updated version of the AKC's Breed book. Very exciting! I love seeing my work in print, and having it published in a widely used and known book is really quite fantastic.
This past weekend on my way to a show I contacted AKC to see what kind of release they needed, and two calls and about eight people later I finally had the woman on the phone that I needed. We talked, she sent me the necessary release, and I found out there were a few things she still needed for their book. New Project!
I'm super excited to be a part of this! With my list of shots, I now embark on a photogrtaphic canine treasure hunt!
