Makeup & Fog | Alyssia Booth's Candid & Studio

Test shoot with with Amy Lewis and Desiree Lacole! These two women are incredibly talented and fun to work with. We did several looks for this shoot varying from light and natural to dramatic with a dark red lipstick.

And the addition of... dry ice! This was so much fun to do. I've worked with dry ice several times outdoors, but never for anything quite like this. (Inspo- the magical Sue Bryce, photographers you can check her out on creativeLive.com! She's a portrait master). This last look, expertly blended with gold and bronze shadows, was my favorite.

A few tips..
*dry ice will burn your skin, so use oven mitts or some very thick gloves to avoid touching it. You may need a hammer or mallet to break it.
*we used rubbermaid tupperware to put the water/dry ice in, which is both low to the ground, and somewhat sturdy. Glass would probably break from the rapid and dramatic temperature changes. I've also used empty ice cream buckets.
*hot water produces more fog than cold
*plan your poses and shoot fast! Fog only lasts a few minutes so knowing what you're doing ahead of time can make a huge difference. For bigger stuff or outdoors shoots, I always end up compositing layers of the fog from different photos into the image.

A Boudoir Shoot With Tiahna | Alyssia Booth's Candid & Studio | Okemos Mi Photographer

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful woman by the name of Tiahna! She's a stunning 22 year old who recently began modeling, and brand new honorary aunty! Her friend actually ended up in labor during our photo shoot and we got to hear all about it.

The setting, the light.. everything was perfect and the photos were gorgeous straight out of the camera. Sometimes I do boudoir in the studio, but this shoot was in a guest room at my house where the natural window light is just absolutely lovely. That, and we had the added perk of a real bed!

Boudoir is one of my favorite types of photography. It's beautiful, empowering, and shows women how gorgeous they really are. Below is a story I think perfectly illustrates this from a fantastic photographer by the name of Kate..

"I visited one of my dearest friends in New York last year and suggested we did a shoot whilst I was there.  We had a lot of fun – drinking vintage champagne and laughing together over a long afternoon.  I remember telling her how beautiful she looked and that this (ie what I was seeing through the lens) was how her husband saw her.  I immediately saw that she doubted what I was saying – that’s women for you. As soon as her husband returned to the apartment she wanted to show him the images on the back of my camera.  She was clearly on a high and as he flicked through the images he turned to her and said “stunning, darling, but that’s how I see you”.  It was a very special moment and I just kept quiet.

The next day as we wandered through SOHO he stopped me, looked me straight in the eye and said a heartfelt thank you for what I had done for her.  I asked him to comment for this column and he wrote to me saying: “My wife has always been beautiful to me but I have learned over the years that how women see their bodies and how men view them are two very different things. The revelation through the boudoir experience, is that for the first time in 14 years, my wife now understands exactly how I see her body. The impact this realisation has had on her has been very liberating and the photos which are tasteful, natural and in my view stunning, are an added bonus”. Beautiful Legs Boudoir

For this shoot I used primarily my 50mm 1.4 lens on my 5D Mark iii. I love the soft, beautiful look I get with that lens. It can be a little tough shooting in close quarters, but on a full frame camera like the Mark iii it works beautifully. If I were still shooting with my 7D, a crop sensor camera, it would be near impossible to shoot like this without a larger room. A different lens would enable me to do so, but then  the entire look of the shoot would change.

Recent Shoots: Heidi and the Violin

I recently did photos for a beautiful violinist and dancer by the name of Heidi.

She's very talented and I actually got to hear her play some during our session! The music she creates is beautiful.

The above and below images were captured at Curwood Castle. I love shooting at that location because there are so many beautiful spots and it's easy do something wonderous, wistful, and wild. The castle is actually yellow, which in some cases can be annoying, but in this case it worked out really well for the conceptual image we did. Any time I have the opportunity, I like to create something special for my clients. After a recent senior session I had a ton of sheet music hanging out at my studio, so I brought it along to the shoot with Heidi and we created a maelstrom of music for this passionate heart.

Mime Time

When I was a senior in high school and student prank day was approaching I wanted to hire a mime to follow around our vice principle for the day and mock everything he did. Unfortunately at the time I had no luck finding a mime to so... It would have been so much fun!

I’ve always found mimes to be fascinating and highly entertaining. I love discovering street performers in my travels. Some of them have been quite brilliant at telling stories with only the use of their body motions.

This shoot is a part of my 52 Weeks of Photography project. It's a personal weekly challenge for myself to do something crazily creative and outside the box of normality that we are all trapped in. Life is meant to be lived, not spent in an endless tidal wave of monotonous chores, and we silently forget that every day of our lives unless something interesting comes along to spur a spark of insane difference strong enough to stir us from our zombie-like stroll of blah and Netflix.

In their silence, mimes can create that spark. They are creative souls, and very expressive. People always stop to watch them, whether out of delighted entertainment or fearful curiosity.
